Chubby Checker

Chubby Checker is an American rock and roll singer and dancer best known for his worldwide hit single “The Twist.” Born Ernest Evans in Spring Gulley, South Carolina, he moved to Philadelphia at age 11 and soon became a regular performer at the city’s famous Uptown Theater.

His first single, "The Class," was released in 1959 and became a regional hit. After signing with Cameo-Parkway Records in 1960, he released the single "The Twist," which was a massive success. The song went on to become the only single to ever reach the number one spot on the Billboard charts twice, and it has become an enduring classic.

In the 1960s, Checker had several more hit singles, including "Pony Time," "Let's Twist Again," "The Fly," and "Slow Twistin'," all of which made it to the top ten on the Billboard charts. He also released a number of albums, including Chubby Checker's Greatest Hits, Twist with Chubby Checker, Let's Limbo Some More, and Chubby Checker's Greatest Hits Vol. 2.

An interesting fact about Chubby Checker is that he is one of the few musicians to have ever had a song reach the top of the charts in two different decades. His single "The Twist" reached the number one spot on the Billboard charts in both 1960 and 1962.
