Fairport Convention is an English folk-rock band formed in 1967. They are widely considered one of the most influential bands in the folk-rock genre, and are credited with starting the British folk revival of the late 1960s. The band's original lineup included Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchings, Simon Nicol, Ian Matthews and Judy Dyble.

The band's first album, Fairport Convention, was released in 1968 and featured the single "Fotheringay," which became an instant classic. Other notable albums include Unhalfbricking (1969), Liege & Lief (1969), and Full House (1970). Liege & Lief is widely considered to be the band's best album, and is credited with introducing electric guitar to traditional folk music. Notable songs from this period include "Matty Groves," "Tam Lin," "Crazy Man Michael" and "Si Tu Dois Partir."

In the late 1970s, the band went through several lineup changes and released several more albums. Notable albums from this period include Rising for the Moon (1975), Gottle O'Geer (1976), and Tipplers Tales (1976). Notable songs from this period include "Walk Awhile," "Flatback Caper," and "The Hiring Fair."

An interesting fact about Fairport Convention is that their song "Matty Groves" was covered by Led Zeppelin and included on their 1975 album Physical Graffiti.
