Leonard Bernstein was an American composer, conductor, pianist, author, and educator, and one of the most influential figures in classical music of the 20th century. He is best known for his work with the New York Philharmonic, including the legendary Young People’s Concerts, and for his Broadway works such as West Side Story and Candide.

His standout albums include his 1954 recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, West Side Story, and his recordings of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 2, which earned him a Grammy Award in 1962. He also conducted the New York Philharmonic in their now-famous recording of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring.

His most popular songs include “America” from West Side Story, “Tonight” from West Side Story, “Maria” from West Side Story, and “Make Our Garden Grow” from Candide.

An interesting fact about Leonard Bernstein is that he was the first American-born and trained conductor to be appointed music director of the New York Philharmonic.
