Sam Cooke (1931-1964) was an American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur, and is considered one of the most influential figures in soul music and popular music in general. His career began as a gospel singer with the renowned Soul Stirrers, and he later branched out into pop, rhythm and blues, and soul music. He is best known for his soulful ballads such as "You Send Me," "Cupid," and "A Change Is Gonna Come."

Some of Cooke's most popular and acclaimed albums are Portrait of a Legend (1951-1964), Ain't That Good News (1964), and Live at the Harlem Square Club (1963). He also released several compilation albums, including The Man and His Music (1965) and The Best of Sam Cooke (1969).

His standout songs include "You Send Me," "Chain Gang," "Cupid," "A Change Is Gonna Come," "Twistin' the Night Away," "Bring It On Home To Me," "Wonderful World," and "Having a Party."

An interesting fact about Sam Cooke is that he was one of the first African-American artists to own the rights to his own music and form his own publishing company, Kags Music.
