In 1976, they released their debut album, I Don't Want To Go Home, which featured their first hit single, "The Fever".

The band's classic lineup consisted of Southside Johnny, keyboardist Jeff Kazee, bassist John Lyon, guitarist Billy Rush, saxophonist Eddie Manion, and drummer Joey Stann. Over the years, the Jukes have released a total of 12 studio albums, with their most successful being Hearts of Stone (1978), which spawned their signature song, "Talk to Me".

Other standout albums from the band include Reach Up and Touch the Sky (1985), Better Days (1991), and At Least We Got Shoes (1997).
