They are renowned for their live performances, often featuring traditional Australian bush dance tunes and songs. Their original line-up included Ray Essery (guitar and lead vocals), Stuart Speed (accordion and vocals), Alan Belk (banjo and vocals), Dave De Hugard (bass and vocals) and John Munro (drums).

The Bushwackers have released several studio albums, with their first, The Bushwackers Band, released in 1975. Other popular albums include the classic Bushwacker Boogie (1981), Dance the Devil Away (1985) and A Salute to the Pubs (1994). They have also released several live albums, including Live at the Basement (1990) and Live at the Pubs (1992).

Some of The Bushwackers' most popular songs include “The Pub With No Beer”, “Down Under”, “Rocky Road to Dubbo”, “Anzac Day”, “Diamantina Drover”, and “Waltzing Matilda”.
