Tower of Power is a funk-soul band from Oakland, California, formed in 1968 by Emilio Castillo and Stephen Kupka. They are best known for their horn-driven sound, tight ensemble playing and soulful vocals. Their classic hits include "What Is Hip?", "You're Still a Young Man," "So Very Hard to Go," "Soul With a Capital S," and "This Time It's Real."

Tower of Power's self-titled debut album was released in 1970 and featured their first hit single "You're Still a Young Man." They went on to release nine more studio albums throughout the 70s and 80s, including Bump City (1972), Back to Oakland (1974), Urban Renewal (1974), In the Slot (1975), and Ain't Nothin' Stoppin' Us Now (1979). Their most successful album was Oakland Zone (1985), which featured the hit single "Soul With a Capital S."

In the 1990s, Tower of Power released four more studio albums, including Souled Out (1990), Monster on a Leash (1992), and Soulfire (1995). Their most recent studio album, Soul Side of Town, was released in 2018.

An interesting fact about Tower of Power is that they were the first band to be signed to Bill Graham's San Francisco-based label, San Francisco Records. They have also collaborated with a variety of musicians over the years, including Huey Lewis, Elton John, and Santana.
