  • The blockbuster "Interstellar" revolves around the adventures of a group of researchers who discover a newly discovered wormhole that can help overcome the limitations of space travel and make it possible to bridge immense distances.

The film was directed by Christopher Nolan ("Inception," "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight"); the epic soundtrack is by Nolan's longtime collaborator, Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe-winning composer Hans Zimmer.

Zimmer and Nolan deliberately wanted to move away from the score of the Batman trilogy and go in a completely new direction.

Before even continuing to work on ",Interstellar," Nolan did something wholly atypical that underscores his desire for emotional material: He asked Zimmer to write music for the film, but without telling him the genre, title, characters or story, "I said, 'I'll give you an envelope with a letter in it.' One page. This page will tell you the gist of the story. You work for a day and then play me what you've written." Zimmer went along with the deal.

The result was perfect. Zimmer recalls an idea from Nolan's letter, "When we have children, we can't help but look at ourselves through their eyes." Zimmer directed 45 scoring sessions for "Interstellar," which was three times as many as for "Inception."

"Interstellar" won the Academy Award for Best Special Effects in 2015; the music was also nominated for an Oscar; as well as BAFTA Awards, Golden Globes and Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
