Shortly after his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival - the breakthrough in his career - Otis Redding announced his decision to produce a record that would be to soul what the Fab Four's Sgt. Pepper was to rock"(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" was unfortunately the only song from this project that Otis Redding was able to record before his sudden death, and so The Dock of the Bay eventually became a mix of various singles and previously unreleased material. Of course, Redding was such a fascinating singer that even a collection as jumbled together as this one should still be heard, because there are undoubtedly a lot of highlights on this album, such as "Tramp", a cheeky duet with Carla Thomas; the funky piece "Don't Mess with Cupid"; or the indescribably heartrending song "Ole Man Trouble" - Dan Epstein
