Alan Parker's 1991 adaptation of Roddy Doyle's novel, "The Commitments," kept the focus off the music - on the classic American R&B and soul that the workers listened to in the Irish pubs.
As a book and also as a movie, "The Commitments" is about the love of music, so it didn't matter that the soundtrack was the "working-class" versions of the oldies that everyone could sing along to.
As long as it was from the heart, the movie would work. As long as it was from the heart, the soundtrack would work. In that sense, "The Commitments" was a cousin to "The Blues Brothers" - but while Jake and Elwood managed to recruit Stax's house band, Irish musicians were brought in for "The Commitments."
