Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer and songwriter. She was born in Newport News, Virginia on April 25, 1917. She is often referred to as the "First Lady of Song" and the "Queen of Jazz".

Fitzgerald began singing professionally at the age of 17. She went on to become one of the most beloved jazz singers of all time, with hits such as “A-Tisket, A-Tasket”, “Dream a Little Dream of Me”, and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)”. She also recorded many acclaimed albums, such as “Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook”, “Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook”, and “Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook”.

Fitzgerald was awarded 14 Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was also the first African-American woman to win a Grammy Award.
