Jan & Dean were an American rock duo that formed in Los Angeles, California in 1958. The duo consisted of William Jan Berry (April 3, 1941 – March 26, 2004) and Dean Ormsby Torrence (born March 10, 1940). They were most active in the 1960s, and are best known for their No. 1 single "Surf City".
The duo released several albums, beginning with 1959's Jan & Dean Take Linda Surfin'. Their other standout albums include 1964's Dead Man's Curve / The New Girl In School, 1965's Folk'n Roll, 1966's Ride the Wild Surf, and 1969's Save for a Rainy Day.
Their most popular singles include "Surf City" (1963), "Drag City" (1963), "The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena)" (1964), "Dead Man's Curve" (1964), "Ride the Wild Surf" (1964), "Sidewalk Surfin'" (1964), and "Popsicle" (1965).
An interesting fact about Jan & Dean is that they are credited with launching the "Beach Boys sound" and have often been referred to as the "godfathers of surf music". They also had a close working relationship with the Beach Boys, often appearing on their albums and co-writing songs with them.
