Malcolm McLaren was an English musician, artist, and impresario, best known for his pioneering role in the British punk movement. Born in London in 1946, McLaren worked in the London street fashion scene before opening a boutique called “Let It Rock” with designer Vivienne Westwood in 1971. The shop became a hub for the burgeoning punk scene and McLaren, who was known as a provocateur, helped shape the look and sound of punk music.

McLaren released his first solo album, Duck Rock, in 1983, which featured hip-hop, funk, and traditional African and Caribbean music. The album’s single “Buffalo Gals” was a hit in the UK and US, reaching number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100. His follow-up album, Fans, was released in 1984 and featured the singles “Madam Butterfly” and “Double Dutch.” His third and final album, Waltz Darling, was released in 1989 and featured the single “Something’s Jumpin’ In Your Shirt.”

An interesting fact about McLaren is that he wrote the screenplay for the cult classic film, The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle, which chronicled the rise and fall of the Sex Pistols. He also managed the band Bow Wow Wow and produced their debut album, See Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang, Yeah, City All Over! Go Ape Crazy!, which featured the hit single “I Want Candy.”
