Manning's career began in 1971 when he joined Chain, a blues-rock band from Melbourne. He remained with the band until its break-up in 1976. Manning then went on to form the band Matt Finish, which released four studio albums between 1979 and 1983.

Manning's most successful and acclaimed albums with Chain and Matt Finish include Toward the Blues (1974), Two of a Kind (1975), Short Note (1980), and Matt Finish (1982).
