Ray Brown (1920–2002) was a jazz bassist, widely regarded as one of the most influential and technically proficient jazz bassists of all time. He is best known for his collaborations with Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald. He was a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s band, and in later years, toured and recorded with his own trio.
Ray Brown’s most acclaimed albums include The Bass-ic Collection (1955), We Got By (1975), and Soular Energy (1984). His standout songs include “A Night In Tunisia”, “Summertime”, and “I Can’t Get Started”.
An interesting fact about Ray Brown is that he was a key contributor to the creation of modern jazz bass playing. He developed a technique of playing walking bass lines and melodic counterpoint, which became the foundation of modern jazz bass playing. He was also one of the first jazz bassists to use amplification to increase the sound of his instrument.
