The Shadows are an English rock and roll group, formed in 1958. They were Cliff Richard's backing group from 1958 to 1968 and were the first backing band to emerge as stars in their own right. The Shadows are one of the most successful instrumental groups of the rock and roll era, having had over 50 UK chart hits and 12 US chart hits.

The Shadows had a string of UK number-one hit singles and albums throughout the 1960s, and their most successful single was the 1961 release "Apache". Other notable hits include "Kon-Tiki" (1961), "Wonderful Land" (1962) and "Foot Tapper" (1963).

The Shadows' debut album, The Shadows (1959), was the first UK rock album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart. The group has had a number of standout albums over the years, including Out of the Shadows (1962), Dance with the Shadows (1964) and Jigsaw (1968).

An interesting fact about The Shadows is that they are considered to be the first “British Invasion” band, as they were the first British band to make an impact in the United States. They performed on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1960 and were the first British band to tour the US.
