Elvin Jones – Dear John C. (Acoustic Sounds Series, Verve)

Elvin Jones's Dear John C. arrived in 1965, while Jones was still reshaping modern jazz from inside the John Coltrane Quartet, and it became his first album for Impulse! as a leader. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio and produced by Bob Thiele, it turns a tribute to Coltrane into something broader: an early statement of Jones's own bandleading voice, rooted in polyrhythmic drive but never reduced to sheer force.
