The composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, winner of the Golden Globe Prize and nominated for the Oscar, BAFTA and Grammy, releases his first album for the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft: it is a meditation on beauty and the process of artistic creation. Jóhannsson is a figurehead in a dynamically growing scene of composers who move freely and imaginatively between film music, classical minimalism, ambient and electronic musicOrphée describes a path from darkness to light, inspired by the different versions of the ancient Orpheus myth, from Ovid to Cocteau. The multi-layered narrative about death, rebirth, change and the ephemerality of memory can also be interpreted as a metaphor for artistic creativityOrphée offers a versatile sound palette: there are acoustic instruments solo or in ensemble combined with electronics and the mysterious sounds of the "number transmitters" on short wave. It is based on many facets of his previous works and incorporates music for solo cello, organ, string quartet, string orchestra and a cappella singing.
