Warsaw's Warsaw captures the band that would soon become Joy Division at a crucial moment in Manchester in May 1978. Recorded at Arrow Studios by the original lineup of Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, it documents the group before Unknown Pleasures, when their sound still leaned hard into raw punk energy while already hinting at the sharper, more distinctive approach that followed.

That in-between quality is what makes this set so absorbing. Early versions of songs such as “Transmission,” “Shadowplay” and “Leaders of Men” show ideas that later became central to Joy Division’s catalogue, but here they arrive in a tougher, more stripped-back form: driving basslines, clipped guitars and Curtis singing with a directness that feels less haunted than urgent. “Warsaw” itself remains one of the clearest links to the band’s first burst of momentum, while “Interzone” and “No Love Lost” underline how quickly the group was developing its own identity.

This edition is especially appealing because it gathers the abandoned 1978 album with bonus material, including “As You Said” and demos dating back to 1977. Rather than a footnote, Warsaw works as a vivid snapshot of a major band before the mythology set in: rough-edged, fast-moving, and full of the tension between punk roots and the darker sound Joy Division would soon refine.
