Keith Jarrett's album "The Melody At Night, With You" breaks with the tradition of its predecessors in some respects. First, it was not recorded at a concert, but at home in the pianist's New Jersey studio. Second, it's not about improvisation as a compositional process, as Jarrett's solo concerts were, but about carefully crafted melodies: love songs by Duke Ellington, George and Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and Oscar Levant, and interpretations of folk songs like " My Wild Irish Rose "and" Shenandoah "It is a standards solo album, but of a very different character than the recordings of the "Standards Trio" with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, which was marked by a joy of playing. This makes for interesting comparisons, as Keith Jarrett often played the pieces and has also recorded some with the trio, for example "Blame It On My Youth" and "Don't Ever Leave Me" on the albums "At The Blue Note" and "The Cure".
