Baden Powell, Janine De Waleyne – Images On Guitar

The sound tableaus drawn with his new quartet are coloured by the voice of Frenchwoman Janine de Waleyne - at last Baden Powell had found a congenial counterpart for his guitar in the partner of Stan Getz and Michel Legrand. "Até-Eu" introduces the journey as a leisurely, almost solemn samba, "Violão Vagabundo" casts its spell with nocturnal, rambling melancholy. The almost funky "Blues À Volonté", rightly a hit in the jazz scene of the time, contains one of the most brilliant scats between Rio, Paris and Baden-Baden. The dramaturgical finesse of "Images" wants it so that virtuoso solo interludes shine between the vocal pieces.

Here we find the LP's other famous piece, the fast-paced "Petit Waltz" with its idiosyncratically tripped-up rhythm in the second part, and the "Conversação Comigo Mesmo" (Soliloquy), a fantastic hermaphrodite of choro and baroque over a percussive foundation. With the simple serenade "Sentimentos" Baden Powell recommends himself as a profound lyricist, only to celebrate tongue-in-cheek chromaticism again with "É De Lei". The "Canto" concludes the blaze of colour as an intense dialogue between almost rocking improvisation and magical sultriness.
