  • When an international weekly newspaper calls a musician the "white pope of black art", it sounds suspiciously like a bluesman in his prime who has already had his good years. Not so! In Johnny Winter's case, reviews during his 2011 tour struck the tone of his early years, with Rolling Stone describing the gaunt Mississippi bard as a "squinty-eyed albino with long, flowing hair who plays just about the most fluid guitar you've ever heard. "

    Whether intentionally or not, it gave Winter a little sniff of the rocker laurels reserved for the young Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. But Winter lets it be heard that all he wanted was the blues, scratchy enough to conjure Howlin 'Wolf's or Muddy Waters' fiddling cavernous groove, yet dexterous enough on the strings to conjure up garlands of notes that fit hair's breadth between two bar lines with amazingly smooth playing.

    Winter stays pretty cool when you try to read personal suffering curves out of his music: "When I play blues, I'm fine," he recently dictated to a journalist in the Octave notebook. The debut album proves on both sides that this was already the case more than 40 years ago.
