Cabaret Voltaire is an English avant-garde electronic music group formed in Sheffield, England in 1973. The group was founded by Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk, and Chris Watson. The trio initially utilized tape machines and synthesisers to create experimental soundscapes influenced by the German krautrock and industrial scenes.
The group released a number of critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1970s and 80s, including The Voice of America (1980), 2x45 (1981), The Crackdown (1983), and Micro-Phonies (1984). Some of their standout songs include "Nag Nag Nag," "Sensoria," "Silent Command," "Yashar," and "Don't Argue."
An interesting fact about Cabaret Voltaire is that they were an important influence on the early acid house scene in the UK. They were also one of the first groups to blend industrial and dance music, a sound that would become a hallmark of the industrial and techno genres.
