  • Having the blues may be one of the very private affairs of the human psyche. Playing the blues, on the other hand, and expressing one's inner state of mind in sounds and words, is probably the most public mission of black music. With Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, two members of the blues guild give their highly personal blues, which also digs deep into their playing technique. The highly talented autodidact Guy nimbly fingered his way to 23rd place in the Rolling Stones magazine's list of the best 100 guitarists of all time and won the coveted Grammy several times. Junior Wells attended high school with Muddy Waters at the tender age of 18 and played the blues harp passionately and virtuously.

In this recording, the actors condense rocking play over a bone dry bass line to a prayer mill-like funky style ("A Man Of Many Words"), then immediately afterwards they move their 12-bar blues tracks in a light-footed step to slender mandolin chirping and create an earthy groove ("T-Bone Shuffle"). Then the duo persistently works its way through on an unbending chord ("A Poor Man's Plea"), only to advance two pieces further on, pulsating powerfully in jagged off-beat ("This Old Fool").

The hand-picked band, in which co-producer Eric Clapton immortalizes himself on the rhythm and bottleneck guitar and voodoo rocker Dr. John occasionally conjures up the keys, stylizes this album into a collectable eavesdropping icon.
