Chillwave

Chillwave is a genre of music that emerged in the mid-2000s as a revival of 1980s synthpop and dream pop. The sound is characterized by its hazy, dreamy, and nostalgic quality. It often features heavily processed, lo-fi production and washed-out, reverb-heavy melodies. Artists associated with the genre include Washed Out, Toro y Moi, Neon Indian, and Memory Tapes.

Chillwave originated in the blogosphere, where artists began to share their music online. The genre gained mainstream attention in 2009, when Pitchfork Media referred to it as a “micro-genre”. Since then, it has continued to evolve and gain recognition, with some artists incorporating elements of indie rock and hip-hop into their sound.
