Clark Terry was an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and started playing the trumpet at the age of 12. He was a master of bebop, and played with many of the most important jazz musicians of the 1950s and '60s, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis.
His most acclaimed albums include In Orbit (1960), Top and Bottom Brass (1962), Color Changes (1965), The Happy Horns of Clark Terry (1966), and Mumbles (1978). Some of his standout songs include "Mumbles," "Stardust," "The Very Thought of You," and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)."
An interesting fact about Clark Terry is that he was the first African-American to become a full-time member of a major white band, the NBC Orchestra. He was also a mentor to many musicians, including Miles Davis and Quincy Jones.
