  • Relaxed West Coast cool jazz meets the rhythmic pulse of the streets of Las Vegas. Out of the Cool from 1960 was Gil Evans' first recording after three albums with Miles Davis. Evans concentrates here on the rhythm section around Elvin Jones, Charlie Persip, Ron Carter and Ray Crawford. The horn section consists of Ray Beckenstein, Budd Johnson and Eddie Caine on saxophones, trombonists Jimmy Knepper, Keg Johnson, bass trombonist Tony Studd, Johnny Coles and Phil Sunkel on trumpet, Bill Barber on tuba and Bob Tricarico on flute, bassoon and piccolo.

Musically, the album is of wondrous variety, with Evans' compositions La Nevada and Sunken Treasure taking center stage. They are complemented by the standard Where Flamingos Fly, Kurt Weill's Bilbao Song and George Russell's classic Stratusphunk. Not only is this set great, but it is also extremely entertaining
