Johnny Cash was already a country legend during his lifetime, although or because he was clearly different from the many singing country lads in a check shirt. For his performances he chose black clothing as a symbol of solidarity for the oppressed and disenfranchised. The self-chosen image of the outlaw was just as convincing as the locomotive-like boom chicka boom sound of his rhythm section, which gives many of his 500 written songs a clear recognition value. At the height of his career, Cash, who himself had only a few minor crimes on his tally, was drawn to the heavy boys behind the prison walls, for whom he sang and played without pay. After an initial rejection of his proposal to market these recordings, the record company finally struggled to release the album "At Folsom Prison". Refined by the success of the prison disc, Columbia released "At San Quentin" a little later. The recording, on which Cash and his combo almost stanzaically reap spontaneous cheers, exceeded all expectations and is still considered the best live cut of the 'Man in Black' by Cash friends today.
