The Highwayman were a country music super group made up of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. The band was active between 1985 and 1995. In 1984 Glen Campbell played the song "Highwayman" to Johnny Cash for the first time. When the four of them were together in Switzerland, they decided to start a project together. When they were all recording their first album together in the studio, Marty Stuart played the songs again for Cash. He said that the song was perfect for them, four verses, four souls and the four together. Campbell then played the song and the group was named "The Highwayman".At the same time, "Highwayman" is the name of their first album and their first single. The four of them thought the name was perfect for them as they have all toured for a long time and all four had an outlaw image in country music. The album and single eventually topped the country charts. The new edition of Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for A Train" had reached the top 20.
