Detective was an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1975. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Michael McKean, bassist Joe Negroni, guitarist Walter Powers, and drummer Larry Scotton.

The band's debut album, It Takes One To Know One, was released in 1977. The album featured the singles "That's the Way It Is" and "You're My Girl," both of which became minor hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Their second album, Unsolved, was released in 1979 and featured the single "The Mean Time," which reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Detective's most successful album was 1982's Rock and Roll Outlaws, which featured the hit singles "It Takes One To Know One," "Mean Time," and "We Can Make It Happen." The album went gold and the singles all charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

An interesting fact about Detective is that they were the first rock band to feature a song with rap vocals on a major label release. The song, "That's the Way It Is," featured rapper Kurtis Blow and was released in 1977.
