Don McLean is an American singer-songwriter and musician best known for his 1971 classic hit “American Pie”. He was born in 1945 in New Rochelle, New York and grew up in a musical household with his father being a professional singer and his mother a pianist.
McLean released his first album, “Tapestry”, in 1970 and followed it up with “American Pie” in 1971, which is one of the longest songs ever released, clocking in at 8 minutes and 36 seconds. It was a massive success and went on to become one of the most iconic songs of the 20th century. Other notable songs of his include “Vincent”, “Castles in the Air”, and “And I Love You So”.
McLean has released a total of 20 studio albums and has sold over 40 million records worldwide. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004 and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012.
An interesting fact about Don McLean is that he is a passionate collector of vintage cars and owns over 30 of them. He also is a big fan of the Beatles and was in attendance at their famous 1969 concert on the roof of the Apple building in London.
