Echo & The Bunnymen are an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1978. The band consists of vocalist Ian McCulloch, guitarist Will Sergeant, and bassist Les Pattinson, with drummers Pete de Freitas and later, Ian Broudie and Steve Greetham. The band's sound has been described as gothic rock and post-punk.
The band's debut album, Crocodiles (1980), which peaked at number 17 in the UK Albums Chart, established the band's blend of psychedelic rock and post-punk. Follow-up albums Heaven Up Here (1981) and Porcupine (1983) were critically acclaimed, and the latter featured the hit single "The Cutter".
Echo & The Bunnymen's fourth album, Ocean Rain (1984), was the band's most successful and was certified gold in the UK and US. It featured the singles "The Killing Moon" and "Seven Seas". The album also featured a cover version of "Silver" by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
The band released two more albums in the late 1980s before breaking up in 1988. McCulloch and Sergeant subsequently formed Electrafixion and released one album before disbanding in 1994. McCulloch and Sergeant reunited Echo & The Bunnymen in 1997 and released What Are You Going To Do With Your Life? (1999), which featured the single "Nothing Lasts Forever".
The band released two more studio albums, Flowers (2001) and Siberia (2005), and the live album Live In Liverpool (2008) before taking a hiatus in 2009. The band reunited in 2014 to release the album Meteorites (2014).
The band's most acclaimed albums are Crocodiles (1980), Heaven Up Here (1981), Porcupine (1983) and Ocean Rain (1984). Notable songs include "The Killing Moon", "Seven Seas", "Bring on the Dancing Horses" and "Nothing Lasts Forever".
An interesting fact about Echo & The Bunnymen is that their song "The Killing Moon" was featured in the movie Donnie Darko in 2001. The song was also covered by rock band U2 in 2009.
