Experimental music is a broad term that encompasses a variety of genres and styles, and has a long and complex history. Its roots can be traced back to the early 20th century, when classical composers such as Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky began to explore new ways of writing and performing music. During the 1950s and 1960s, jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, and Sun Ra began experimenting with new forms of improvisation and composition. During the same period, rock musicians such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones experimented with different instruments, sounds, and recording techniques. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, artists such as Brian Eno, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass developed new approaches to composition, often referred to as minimalism.
