Freddie Hubbard (1938-2008) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer who is considered one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century. He began playing the trumpet at age thirteen and quickly developed a style that blended the hard bop, post-bop, and modal jazz of the 1950s and 1960s.
Hubbard released dozens of albums as a leader and sideman, many of which are considered jazz classics. Notable albums as a leader include Open Sesame (1960), Ready for Freddie (1961), Hub-Tones (1962), and Red Clay (1970). His work with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, and Chick Corea is also highly regarded.
Notable songs include "Little Sunflower," "Up Jumped Spring," and "Red Clay."
An interesting fact about Freddie Hubbard is that he was the first jazz musician to record with a synthesizer. He used the Moog synthesizer on his 1970 album, Red Clay.
