There are not many other artists like singer, songwriter, dancer and actress Asha Puthli who have excelled in such a wide range of genres. From 60s psych, classical Indian music, free jazz, pop, soul, disco to rock - the list could go on. A "best-of" or "essential collection" is always something subjective, but for this incredibly first official compilation covering the full range of Asha's illustrious career, we wanted to offer a snapshot of her ever-evolving musical journey and a tribute to the vast wealth of her catalog.
Some singers want to be famous, some are pop star icons, and some are artists; Asha is one of the latter. Asha is a true force of nature, no matter what genre she is in, she engages, moves on and reinvents herself, always evolving. Looking back on Asha's career, it's clear what a trailblazer she was, opening doors for her contemporaries and those who came later to step through. Whether consciously or unconsciously, one can see Asha's influence in aspects of Kate Bush's ethereal image and performance, Donna Summer's smooth vocal sound and disco styling, and the panache and power of Grace Jones.
