George Szell (1897-1970) was a Hungarian-born American conductor, pianist and composer who is widely regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. He served as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra for over twenty years and was responsible for transforming the orchestra into one of the world's leading ensembles.
Szell's most acclaimed albums include Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Mahler's Symphony No. 5, and Mozart's Symphony No. 40. His recordings of Beethoven and Mozart are considered some of the finest interpretations of these works.
Some of Szell's standout songs include Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.
An interesting fact about George Szell is that he was a strong advocate of contemporary music, commissioning and conducting world premieres of works by composers such as Bartok, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky.
