Hampton Hawes (1928-1977) was an American jazz pianist and composer from Los Angeles, California. He is best known for his contributions to the hard bop and post bop styles of jazz. He is remembered for his unique phrasing and use of dissonance. Hawes's standout albums include At the Piano (1956), Here and Now (1958), and The Trio (1958). He also released several solo albums, including The Green Leaves of Summer (1960), Blues for Walls (1961), and A Fire in the West (1975). Some of Hawes's most well-known songs include "Four", "All Night Long", "Oleo", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Maiden Voyage". An interesting fact about Hampton Hawes is that he was one of the first jazz musicians to sign a long-term contract with a major record label, signing with Contemporary Records in 1956.
