The Goon Sax – Mirror II (Clear Vinyl)

"Mirror II" is already the third album of the Australian indie band, at the same time their debut on their new label Matador Records and also a departure into new sound worlds. The 2016 debut album "Up To Anything" was a mixture of self-discovery and musical field tests to the successor "We're Not Talking" (2018) had found its very own sound. For "Mirror II", the three Australians took three years. Louis moved to Berlin in the meantime, where he worked in a cinema, while Riley and James formed a post-punk band called Soot. All three experimented with partly abstract music and atonal sounds during this time, now the return to pop follows. Each band member brings their own unique style of songwriting to the table. Riley's musical idols like Les Rallizes Dénudés, Keijo Haino but also Kylie Minogue can be heard on "Desire" and "Tag"

Louis, on the other hand, is influenced by avant-garde pop. He loves bands like HTRK, Young Marble Giants and Stereolab, but also hits by poppier artists like The 1975 or Justin Bieber. From these influences came songs like "Psychic" and "In the Stone." His way of writing songs always brought him comparisons with the great Australian band The Go-Betweens - no wonder, after all Robert Forster is his father. So the sound doesn't fall so far from the tree. James Harrison is a great admirer of Syd Barrett, the Walker Brothers, Felt and Jandek, which you can hear on the psychedelic tracks "Carpetry" and "Caterpillars"
