J.J. Johnson (1924-2001) was an American jazz trombonist, composer, and arranger. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential trombonists of all time. Johnson is credited with revolutionizing the role of the trombone in jazz, bringing it from a background instrument to a solo instrument.

Johnson's most acclaimed albums include Blue Trombone (1953), Heroes (1958), The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson (1955), and Betwixt & Between (1967). He also released several collaborations with other artists, such as The Great Kai & J.J. (1955) with Kai Winding, and Betwixt & Between (1967) with Kai Winding, Slide Hampton, and Ray Brown.

Some of Johnson's most popular songs include "Wee Dot," "Lament," and "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars."

An interesting fact about J.J. Johnson is that he was one of the first African-American jazz musicians to be recognized for their achievements in the jazz world. He was awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award in 1997.
