Jay McShann was an American jazz and blues pianist and bandleader born in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1916. He was best known for his work in Kansas City jazz during the 1940s, when he played with Charlie Parker, Ben Webster, and Buster Smith. McShann's most famous composition is the 1940 blues song, "Confessin' the Blues".
McShann's career began in the 1930s when he formed his own band and began performing in clubs throughout the Midwest. His first recorded song, "Hootie Blues", was released in 1941. His first album, 1940-1941, was released in 1958. It featured classic blues songs such as "Confessin' the Blues" and "T-Bone Shuffle". Other notable albums from McShann's career include Kansas City Reunion (1972), Goin' to Kansas City (1986), and All in My Mind (1988).
