Jim Keays (1946–2014) was an Australian rock singer and songwriter, best known as the frontman of The Masters Apprentices. He was born in Scotland and moved to Australia at the age of 15.
The Masters Apprentices released their debut album, Choice Cuts, in 1965 and had a string of successful singles in Australia, including "Living in a Child's Dream", "Think About Tomorrow Today", and "Turn Up Your Radio". Their breakthrough hit was "Undecided", released in 1966, which reached the Top 10 in Australia and the UK.
The Masters Apprentices' most successful album was Buried and Dead (1971), which peaked at No. 2 on the Australian albums chart. Other notable albums include Turn Up Your Radio! (1967), Masterpiece (1968), and A Toast to Panama Red (1970).
In the early 1970s, Keays embarked on a solo career, releasing the album Jim Keays Sings His Greatest Hits (1973), which featured re-recordings of Masters Apprentices songs. He continued to perform with The Masters Apprentices until the group disbanded in 1972.
One interesting fact about Jim Keays is that he was the first rock musician in Australia to be inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, in 1988.
