Joe Cocker (1944-2014) was an English singer and musician known for his gruff and powerful blues-rock vocal style. He is best known for his cover of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends," which he performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and released as a single in 1968. His other notable songs include "You Are So Beautiful," "Up Where We Belong," and "Unchain My Heart."
Cocker's first two albums, With a Little Help from My Friends (1968) and Joe Cocker! (1969), both reached the top 10 in the UK, while his third album, Mad Dogs & Englishmen (1970), was a live album recorded with a large backing band and reached number one in the US and number two in the UK. Cocker's fourth studio album, I Can Stand a Little Rain (1974), was certified gold in the US and platinum in the UK.
Cocker's most successful album was his 1986 release, Unchain My Heart, which reached number two in the US and number one in the UK and spawned the hit singles "Unchain My Heart," "When the Night Comes," and "You Can Leave Your Hat On." His last studio album, Fire It Up (2012), reached number eight in the UK.
An interesting fact about Joe Cocker is that he was the first artist to record a cover version of the Beatles' song "With a Little Help from My Friends." This version of the song became his signature hit, reaching the top 10 in several countries.
