Joy Division
Joy Division was an English post-punk band formed in Manchester, England in 1976. The band originally consisted of Ian Curtis on vocals, Bernard Sumner on guitar, Peter Hook on bass and Stephen Morris on drums. Their sound combined elements of punk rock, electronic music, and dance music.
Joy Division's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 and is now considered to be a classic of the post-punk era. It featured the tracks "She's Lost Control", "Shadowplay" and "Transmission". Their second album, Closer, was released in 1980 and was even more acclaimed than their first album. It featured the tracks "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Atmosphere" and "Isolation".
Joy Division's influence on music has been immense and they are considered to be one of the most important post-punk bands of all time. An interesting fact about the band is that they never performed outside the United Kingdom during their short career. After Ian Curtis' suicide in 1980, the remaining members formed the band New Order and continued to create music for many years.
