Ike Quebec never achieved the superstar status of some of his colleagues on the BlueNote label. His musical style on the tenor saxophone was not individual enough for that and his lifestyle with massive drug abuse was probably also too erratic. He appeared frequently as a session player and brought Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell to Blue Note. Shortly before his death from lung cancer in 1962, however, he recorded a memorable album and participated in the bossa nova mania that was just taking place, without any Brazilian players at all.
Playing with distinct sensitivity are Ike Quebec on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Wendell Marshall on bass, Willie Bobo on drums, and Garvin Masseaux beats and shakes the chekere, less known as a jazz instrument.
