Miriam Makeba

Miriam Makeba was a South African singer, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist who rose to international fame in the 1950s and 60s. She was an advocate for the civil rights of black South Africans during the Apartheid era. She was the first African artist to win a Grammy Award and was nicknamed Mama Africa.

Makeba released her debut album, Miriam Makeba, in 1959 and her second album, The Voice of Africa, in 1960. Her other notable albums include Pata Pata (1967), Soweto Blues (1986), and Homeland (2004). Some of her most popular songs include "Pata Pata," "The Click Song," and "The Boy From Ipanema."

An interesting fact about Miriam Makeba is that she was the first African musician to perform at the United Nations in 1963, when she sang "The Click Song" in support of the Anti-Apartheid Movement. She used her platform to advocate for civil rights and was an inspiration to many.
