Mountain
Mountain is an American hard rock band that formed in 1969. The band is best known for their 1971 song "Mississippi Queen" which was a hit single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band's classic lineup consisted of Leslie West on guitar and vocals, Felix Pappalardi on bass and vocals, Steve Knight on keyboards, and Corky Laing on drums.
Mountain's first album, Climbing!, was released in 1970 and featured their breakout single "Mississippi Queen". The album also included the popular track "Theme From an Imaginary Western", which has been covered by numerous artists. Mountain's follow-up albums, Nantucket Sleighride and Flowers of Evil, were released in 1971 and 1972 respectively. Both albums featured hit singles, including "Nantucket Sleighride" and "Taunta (Sammy's Tune)".
In 1973, Mountain released their fourth album, Avalanche. The album featured the hit single "Never in My Life" which became a staple of classic rock radio. The band went on to release two more albums, 1974's Twin Peaks and 1975's Go For Your Life, before disbanding in 1976.
An interesting fact about Mountain is that they were the first act to be signed to the newly formed record label, Windfall Records, in 1970. The label was started by their manager, David Krebs, and was eventually bought out by Columbia Records. Mountain was also one of the first hard rock bands to incorporate elements of jazz, funk, and blues into their sound.
