How much creative powder had Al Di Meola already shot in his young career? The first is the flamenco fireworks on the top seller "Elegant Gypsy" and the second is the equally widespread San Francisco summit meeting with Paco de Lucia and John McLaughlin.After this preliminary run, it is not surprising that prominent colleagues like Jan Hammer, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd, Anthony Jackson and Les Paul are once again in "Splendido Hotel" to take over the reins. This colourful mix of personnel brings rich sound and innumerable flavours to the style cocktail, which can be enjoyed as a double LP in the best long drink manner.Di Meola's idea of fusion is first formed in the opener as a sluggish oriental melody, which soon merges into rock rhythm. High-speed and detail-loving flamenco like in "Splendido Sundance", alternates with subtle rhythms ("Two To Tango") and good-humoured, mildly electronic lightweights like "Roller Jubilee" and a funky styled version of Bert Kaempfert's "Spanish Eyes". In this way the musicians create a wonderful ambience in which every Latin aficionado feels at home.
