This is a combination of lush, subtly layered music, but the best thing about this record is that it comes along unstrained and relaxed. In fact, you need several runs to see how versatile Withers is on "Still Bill". He manages to make complex, funky rhythms sound effortless and simple - like on the most famous song of the album, the gospel-soaked anthem "Lean On Me"That's the fantastic thing about Wither's music: it's warm and catchy, but has a depth and complexity that reveals itself from time to time. Then there is the sheer quality of the songwriting, which is as self-confident on the grooving "Lonely Town, Lonely Street" as suspicious and paranoid as "Who Is He (And What Is He To You?)", while on "Use Me" it is happily used by its object of desire. The high quality of the songwriting is consistently high throughout the record, making "Still Bill" perhaps the best Bill Withers record ever.
