  • Booker T. & The MG's were the backing band for the soul duo Sam & Dave, and it was their hits that would be revisited years later by comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi and brought to a new audience in the movie The Blues Brothers

Green Onions is the debut album by Booker T. & the MG's, released in October 1962 on Stax Records. It reached # 33 on the pop album chart in the month of its release. The title single was a worldwide hit and was covered by dozens of artists, including The Blues Brothers and Roy Buchanan (both with Steve Cropper on guitar), as well as The Ventures, Al Kooper, The Shadows, Mongo Santamaría and Count Basie.

As an instrumental soul band they were the house band of Stax Records in the sixties, playing on hundreds and hundreds of recordings by artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett and Bill Withers.
Their huge hit "Green Onions" was recorded by accident when they started recording the song during the downtime of a recording session for Billy Lee Riley. Stax boss Jim Stewart liked what he heard and began - without the band's knowledge - to record their impromptu session. And the rest, as they say as they say, is history.
