Originally released in 1999, it became the most successful indie album of the year and has won platinum awards in over 20 countries. With "Play" Moby changed his way of working once again. He took samples from folk and gospel - many of them from the archive of Alan Lomax - and combines them with his electronic soundscapes. He cuts loops from the samples, which he repeats endlessly: Bessie Jones "Sometimes" is repeated more than 20 times in "Honey" and so he unfolds the hypnotic pull that made this song a hit. On release, many Moby fans who had expected a techno album turned away and the album didn't make it into the charts significantly. It was to take over ten months before the tide turned and the album turned into an absolute hit after all. With 9 (!) single releases and countless licences for TV shows, films and commercials, the album has become a long seller and has sold well over 12 million units to date.
